"Teaching Scientific Reasoning: 150 years of confusion?"

Abstract

In this talk, I will examine the history of this project and some of its notable failures.  Despite the view that learning science encourages critical thinking, there is little evidence that students are offered the opportunities to think critically, nor that we are any clearer on how to achieve this goal.  Drawing on recent work on styles of scientific reasoning (Kind and Osborne, 2017), I will argue that this framework offers a deeper understanding of what should be the goals of teaching reasoning and pointers to how these goals might be achieved.
